THE MULTI-AGENT FINANCIAL ANALYST
How to build an AI system that doesn’t just read SEC filings, but actively orchestrates computational tools to calculate real-time financial metrics.
The Problem
Financial analysis is fundamentally a combination of qualitative research and quantitative computation. An analyst evaluating a company must read through 150 pages of an SEC 10-K filing to understand management’s strategic direction, but they must also pull historical pricing data, compute a Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) beta, and calculate inventory turnover ratios to determine operational efficiency.
The business problem is that automating this workflow requires a system capable of bridging two entirely different paradigms: the semantic flexibility required to understand text, and the rigid determinism required to execute financial math.
Why the Obvious Solution Isn’t Enough
The obvious solution is a standard Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipeline. You ingest all the SEC filings, embed them in a vector database, and ask an LLM to generate an analysis.
If you ask a standard RAG system: “How does Microsoft’s inventory turnover compare to its CAPM expected return?” it will fail catastrophically.
It cannot reliably do math. LLMs predict tokens; they do not natively compute division or regression analysis.
It will hallucinate financial figures if it cannot find the exact pre-calculated metric in a document.
It cannot execute a multi-step plan (e.g., “First find the risk-free rate, then find the stock beta, then calculate CAPM”).
