Freemium: Policy Gradients That Actually Work

Hello!
Welcome to today’s edition of Business Analytics Review!
Most teams still treat policy optimization like a black-box tuning problem: run more episodes, hope the gradient signal somehow points the right way, and watch variance explode until the whole run collapses. The counter-intuitive reality is that the simplest policy-gradient estimator, REINFORCE, is unbiased yet so noisy that it routinely wastes 80-90 percent of collected experience on uninformative updates. In production robotics and large-language-model post-training pipelines, that noise translates directly into days of wasted GPU time and policies that never escape local plateaus.
The deeper issue is not sample count; it is the architectural decision to optimize the policy directly while still relying on Monte-Carlo returns that contain every random reward that arrives after an early action.
