Freemium: SQL for Data Analysis

Hello!
Welcome to today’s edition of Business Analytics Review!
Most teams treat joins, aggregations, and window functions as basic SQL vocabulary. Yet production dashboards still return wrong totals, explode in cost, or quietly drop entire customer segments. The paradox is sharp: the same three constructs that power nearly every analytical query are also the most common source of silent data corruption and runaway compute bills.
Analysts write an INNER JOIN that looks correct on a sample, then discover weeks later that the join condition discarded 18 percent of revenue records because of null keys. GROUP BY queries that ran in seconds on a million-row table suddenly scan billions of rows after a schema change. Window functions that calculate running totals or ranks produce beautiful results on the laptop and then timeout in the warehouse because the partition and order clauses were never indexed. These failures are not rare edge cases. They are the predictable outcome of treating relational mechanics as syntax rather than architecture.
When the underlying data model grows, default habits (copy-paste joins, unexamined GROUP BY lists, window functions without frame clauses) stop scaling. The cost shows up first in query latency, then in stakeholder distrust, and finally in the quiet decision to move the logic into Python or a BI tool that hides the same problems behind a prettier interface.
